KORFIL Hi-R® Masonry Wall System

Description

Basic Use: Specially designed concrete masonry unit and individually molded insulation insert. The block and the insulation are combined at delivery to the site. The assembly provides a wall system capable of achieving higher thermal R values than conventional masonry, with no effect on the structural integrity of masonry construction.

The Hi-R Wall System, like conventional concrete masonry units insulated with Korfil, saves job site labor costs simply because all units are delivered with insulation already in the blocks. In addition:

  • No lost time or rework if inspection rejects the quality of on-site workmanship
  • Work by other trades is performed with little danger of damage to insulation
  • The block itself can be used as a bond beam or lintel eliminating the need to deliver several different types of blocks to the job site
  • The actual cost of insulation is a firm figure, as compared to estimated values used when insulation material is site installed where labor efficiency may vary and where losses may be sustained due to damage or theft

Limitations: As is the case with any expanded polystyrene product, KORFIL Hi-R® should not be exposed to temperatures in excess of 180°F for prolonged periods of time.

Composition and Materials:

Masonry Units: Plain Faced, as well as Decorative Faced, units in 8, 10, and 12 inch widths with nominal 8"x16" face dimensions, conforming to ASTM C90, Grade N or S, Type 1 or Type II, with the exception of Table 3 covering minimum thickness of webs. Units are manufactured with lightweight or normal weight aggregate. Sash and corner units conform to ASTM C90, Grade N or S, Type I or Type II.

Insulation:

  1. Korfil Molded Polystyrene Unit Masonry Insulation is manufactured by CBIS, P.O. Box 1000, West Brookfield, MA, and third party certified.
  2. Insulation conforms to the applicable physical property requirements of ASTM C578-95 with a density range of 1.0 to 1.3 lb/cu. ft.

  • ASTM C 90-95, Specification for Hollow Load Bearing Concrete Masonry Units.

Technical Data: The Thermal Characteristics tables show the thermal resistance (Rt), including inside and outside air surface resistances of .68 and .17 hr-ft2-°F/BTU, respectively, and the U-values for various densities of concrete masonry units.

Installation

Preparatory Work: None required. Inserts are placed in blocks prior to delivery to the job site. Inserts do not affect the handling of blocks so no added labor is involved. Precautions: During storage and installation, good fire safety procedures should be followed. Care should also be taken to make certain all broken or damaged inserts are replaced.

Availability and Cost

Availability: KORFIL Inserts are manufactured under protection of a United States Patent. They are sold only to concrete block manufacturers. Contact a CBIS/KORFIL representative for order and delivery information. KORFIL Hi-R Inserts are nonproprietary.

Cost: Specific price information is available only through local block manufacturers.

Warranty: KORFIL products are warranted to meet published specifications at the time of delivery. For further information, contact a CBIS/KORFIL representative.

Maintenance: No maintenance is necessary.

Technical Services: Support is provided by full-time, technically-trained CBIS/KORFIL sales representatives and technical service personnel, backed by a central research and development department and technical service staff.
